Winter Solstice Celebrations Around the World
Winter solstice usually occurs during December 21-22 of each year (in the Northern Hemisphere) when the days are shortest. Celebrations around this time of year signify ‘the return of the sun’ as the days start getting longer again and people around the world look forward to ‘brighter days ahead.’ Many people who are indigenous to Canada still celebrate the winter solstice, and the holiday season is a great time to foster a community with people who may celebrate different traditions than us… especially when it connects us to nature and our own planet!
For many Indigenous people, winter is seen as a time of deep reflection, and of spiritual, mental, and physical self-care. It is also a time to care for loved ones, thank ancestors, and share stories with community members.
While winter solstice celebrations across the globe may vary, the essence of connecting with loved ones, reflecting on the past, and setting intentions for the year ahead bleeds through all of them.
