Top Tips for Fire Prevention in Your Home
Person testing a fire alarm
Here at Cadman Group, our commitment to the well-being of our tenants extends beyond providing comfortable living spaces. Fire safety is a paramount concern, and we encourage our tenants to take proactive measures to ensure you’re well- informed and prepared. Here are our top fire prevention tips to help you protect your home and maintain a secure living environment.
Smoke Alarms and Fire Detection
Our properties are equipped with state-of-the-art smoke alarms and fire detection systems. Make sure these devices are functioning correctly and promptly report any issues to our maintenance team. For your individual units, regularly test the smoke alarms and replace the batteries as needed, typically every six months. These alarms are your first line of defense in the event of a fire.
Emergency Escape Plan
Familiarize yourself with the layout of your building and identify all emergency exits and escape routes. Knowing how to exit the building quickly and safely can be invaluable during a fire emergency. We provide clear evacuation plans in common areas for your reference. You should also know where the closest fire extinguisher is located and learn how to use it in the event of an emergency.
Electrical Safety
Electrical issues can be a common cause of apartment fires. Avoid overloading electrical outlets and extension cords, and report any signs of electrical problems immediately. Our maintenance team is on hand to address these issues promptly, ensuring your safety.
Responsible Cooking Practices
The kitchen is a potential hotspot for fire hazards. When cooking, never leave the stove or oven unattended. Keep flammable items away from the cooking area, and invest in a fire extinguisher for your kitchen. Our properties are designed with safety in mind, but responsible cooking habits are equally crucial. Never leave any cooking appliance unattended, especially when using stovetops, pressure cookers and/or deep fryers. Keep flammable materials, such as towels or curtains, away from the cooking area. In case of a grease fire, avoid using water; instead, smother the flames with a lid or fire extinguisher.
Smoking Safety
While many of our buildings are non-smoking, for those who smoke in approved spaces always use designated outdoor smoking areas with fireproof receptacles. Please adhere to these designated areas and ensure that cigarettes are fully extinguished before disposal. Smoking inside your apartment poses a significant fire risk and is strongly discouraged.
Indoor Space Heaters
NEVER use indoor space heaters. They pose a significant fire risk.
Candles and Open Flames
While candles can create a warm atmosphere, they should be used with caution. Keep candles away from flammable materials, and always remember to extinguish them before leaving the room or going to sleep. To enjoy a similar ambiance, you might consider using flameless LED candles as a safer alternative. Some candles are also made from materials that aren’t healthy for you to breathe, so we suggest checking the packaging to learn more.
Fire-Safe Furnishings
When decorating your apartment, opt for fire-resistant furnishings and materials where possible. Fire-resistant curtains and upholstery can slow the spread of fire in case of an emergency. Additionally, you should always be mindful of the placement of space heaters, ensuring they are away from furniture and curtains.
